Combustible dust is present across a large number of industrial sectors and can pose more hazards than most facility personnel are aware of. In addition to this, the NFPA and OSHA have set certain requirements for conducting a Dust Hazard Analysis with associated deadlines. This presentation will discuss what is needed to conduct a Dust Hazard Analysis, including identifying typical combustible dust hazards and their ignition sources; the roles these hazards play in the Dust Hazard Analysis; and how to safely protect and control these hazards. While there are many ways to protect and control dust hazards, we will review multiple abatement techniques, for facilities both in the design phase as well as that are already operational. I will identify feasible methods for interpreting the need for mechanical safeguards, monitors and sensors, and operational procedures as means for mitigating the identified risks.
