Stainless steels are widely chosen for their corrosion resistance, with mechanical properties such as strength, hardness, and ductility often considered secondary. Because of this, ensuring weld integrity through cleanliness and proper technique is critical. Contamination or oxidation during welding can compromise performance and durability. This session will provide an overview of the primary types of stainless steel, common welding discontinuities and defects, and corrosion-related challenges. Emphasis will be placed on issues specific to stainless steel welds and best practices for avoiding weld-related failures.
Attendees will receive a copy of AWS D1.6:2017, Structural Welding Code – Stainless Steel, along with a photocopy of The Professional’s Advisor on Welding of Stainless Steels as reference materials.
