Today's automotive lightweight-initiatives include the increase use of aluminum, stainless steel and advance high-strength steels (AHSS) in automotive chasis, body structure and interior systems. These lightweight materials have profound - sometimes catastrophic - effects on metal stamping dies, stamping presses and coil feed lines. This presentation examines important mechanical and physical properties for each material type, their effects on the metal stamping process and, in turn, their impact on die design and construction practices employed by metal stamping companies and tool & die shops.
