A Novel Approach to Tool & Die Apprenticeship Programs
Basic
Metal stamping companies struggle to find qualified candidates for their tool & die apprenticeship programs because high school and vocational school students are not interested in - or are unaware of - manufacturing opportunities, often choosing construction trades instead.
This presentation proposes a novel approach to filling the skilled trades shortage through implementation of a Press Technician Apprenticeship Program. This program includes subject matter that is transferred to tool & die and other traditional apprenticeship programs. The press technician gains an in-depth understanding of the production process as they learn to see and understand the stamping process as “math in motion.” This approach also breaks down barriers between skilled trades and production since the skilled trades apprentices come from the production area.
Finally, the new career opportunities can make it easier to attract new employees to the press shop, especially those that are motivated by career opportunities.
